The practice

Research made useful at work.

La Delfa Research & Ergonomics was created to help close the gap between ergonomics science and workplace action. Nick's background spans ergonomics, occupational biomechanics, education, and the development and practical application of research evidence.

His active academic research contributes to current developments in the field. Through an independent consulting practice, that expertise is focused on practical workplace questions: understanding concerns, evaluating relevant factors, communicating priorities clearly, and helping organizations choose appropriate next steps.

Professional background

Nicholas La Delfa, PhD

Nick has more than 15 years of experience in ergonomics and biomechanics. He holds a PhD in Occupational Biomechanics and an MSc in Ergonomics and completed postdoctoral training in shoulder biomechanics.

He is a full member of the Association of Canadian Ergonomists and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. He is also the recipient of the 2026 Applied Ergonomics Conference Young Investigator Award, recognizing his contributions to ergonomics research.

Nick's experience includes ergonomics work in office, manufacturing, and mining environments. Manufacturing is a particular area of research depth and practical experience.

Current science

Informed by active contribution to the field.

Evidence-based practice requires both a strong understanding of established knowledge and attention to how ergonomics science continues to develop. Nick is actively involved in academic research that contributes to current developments in ergonomics and occupational biomechanics. This perspective supports thoughtful interpretation of evidence and its practical application to workplace decisions.

Independence

Independent consulting, clearly separated.

Nick is an Associate Professor at Ontario Tech University, where he leads the Occupational Neuromechanics & Ergonomics Laboratory (ONE Lab). La Delfa Research & Ergonomics is his independent consulting practice. Its services are provided separately from Ontario Tech University and ONE Lab and are not university or ONE Lab services.

Formal academic research and research collaborations involving university resources, students, funding, publication, or institutional participation are conducted through Ontario Tech University under appropriate agreements.
